Move over Frankenfish and Enviropig there’s a new bug in town. British biotech company, Oxitec has applied for permission from the FDA to release genetically engineered mosquitos into the Florida Keys. The company says their experimental mosquitos will help control mosquito populations by affecting how they breed, adding that these GE mosquitos are needed to stop the spread of diseases such as Dengue Fever. Local residents say their methods of mosquito control are working, there hasn’t been a case of Dengue Fever in the Florida Keys since 2010.
